These resources are designed to be used in a number of ways...

teacher
  • by the teacher using a data projector and/or interactive whiteboard. It would be advisable here to maximise the screen display (press function key F11 in Internet Explorer). Most pages have been designed with an interactive whiteboard in mind; for example, access to the keyboard is rarely required.
  • for GCSE exam preparation at the end of the GCSE course
  • for summarising at the end of a topic. Though the resources are clearly aimed at Intermediate level GCSE, the contents will still apply to other students, possible at Higher level in Key Stage 4, or more able students at Key Stage 3. Any topic section provides a concise summary of the type of problem the students will have to deal with in later examinations.
  • all topics can be accessed by the topic menu system. Alternativly there is a search system. The teacher can ask students to tackle a specific question by giving the question number. For example question 1318 is a set of 10 linear equations to solve.

student
  • by the student individually at school or at home. These resources were first developed for this scenario, to encourage independent self-learning
  • by the students themselves supervised by a teacher in a computer lab at school or college. In this case the students should be advised to have paper, pen and calculator available to work through problems, since it is unlikely that they will learn much simply by clicking through the step by step solutions

MathsNet GCSE can be used with all the various examination syllabii:

Many questions quote a syllabus and paper number. This is a guide only as the displayed question is only based on that source and clearly with the ability to change the details in each question it is not a facsimile of the original. A close look at the intermediate papers from all the exam boards confirms that there is little or no variation between them in terms of both style and content.
