Having technical problems? To use the resources on MathsNet-GCSE you should be using a modern browser that has Java, JavaScript and Cookies enabled. Your current settings are shown in the next box...
If you are having problems running Java applets or have been directed to this page via the JAVA ERROR message then please be aware that there is presently an incompatibility with Sun Java 6 update 13 (1.6.0_13) which sometimes prevents Java being displayed properly on pages even though the front screen says it is enabled. To solve this problem on a PC go to Start >> Control Panel >> Java >> Advanced >> Java Plug-in and switch off "Enable next generation Java Plug-in". Then restart your browser.
The following tables show how to turn on Java, JavaScript and Cookies for the main browsers that are currently in use on the Windows platform.
Internet Explorer 6/7/8
Turn Java On Go to Tools >> Internet Options >> Advanced and scroll down the list until you see Microsoft VM or Java (Sun). Make sure at least one of the options directly below that heading is enabled. If nothing works then follow the instructions at the bottom of the page.
Turn JavaScript On Go to Tools >> Internet Options >> Security >> Custom Level and scroll down to the Scripting section. Make sure that Active Scripting is enabled.
Enable Cookies Go to Tools >> Internet Options >> Privacy and change the setting to Medium or Medium High. If you use a "firewall" you may have to change settings there too.

Mozilla FireFox 3
Turn Java On Go to Tools >> Options >> Content and tick the Enable Java checkbox.
Turn JavaScript On Go to Tools >> Options >> Content and tick the Enable JavaScript checkbox.
Enable Cookies Go to Tools >> Options >> Privacy and make sure that the Accept Cookies checkbox is ticked. The third-party option setting should not affect this site.

Opera 9.x
Turn Java On Go to Tools >> Preferences >> Advanced >> Content and tick the Enable Java checkbox.
Turn JavaScript On Go to Tools >> Preferences >> Advanced >> Content and tick the Enable JavaScript checkbox. Also, check the JavaScript Options and make sure that Allow resizing of windows is ticked.
Enable Cookies Go to Tools >> Preferences >> Advanced >> Cookies and make sure that either the Accept Cookies or Accept only cookies from the site I visit option is selected. We recommend the latter.

Safari 3.x
Turn Java On Go to Edit >> Preferences >> Security and tick the Enable Java checkbox.
Turn JavaScript On Go to Edit >> Preferences >> Security and tick the Enable Javascript checkbox.
Enable Cookies Go to Edit >> Preferences >> Security and make sure that either the Accept cookies Always or Only from sites you navigate to option is selected. We recommend the latter.

Google Chrome 2.x
Turn Java On Currently, Java is always enabled in this browser.
Turn JavaScript On Currently, JavaScript is always enabled in this browser.
Enable Cookies Go to Tools (the spanner icon) >> Options >> Under the Hood and select with the Allow all cookies or Restrict how third-party cookies can be used option. We recommend the latter.

If any of the above Turn Java On options do not work then it may be that you do not actually have Java installed on your computer. In that case download and install the latest SUN version.

Apple Mac Users Please Note

MathsNetGCSE makes extensive use of Java and JavaScript technologies, and there are issues with LiveConnect (which provides links between Java and JavaScript) on Macintosh computers running Mac OS X versions 10.2.x or earlier. Version 10.3.x or later should be ok.
